To protect archaeological heritage within the Northeast Greenland National Park, ship landings at designated sites require visitors to be accompanied by a guide approved by an NKA-approved guide. These guides possess the necessary expertise to identify and safeguard ancient archaeological features and ensure that visitors comply with park regulations and best practices.

NKA-approved guide status is granted based on the following criteria:

  1. A degree in Arctic archaeology or related science.
  2. Prior archaeological fieldwork experience in North or Northeast Greenland.
  3. Demonstrated experience with Paleo-Inuit and Thule culture Inuit archaeology.
  4. Thorough knowledge of Greenlandic Heritage Law.

The Greenland National Museum and Archives currently awards this status on a case-by-case basis. To be considered for NKA-approved guide status, applicants should submit a cover letter and CV to nka@natmus.gl. Reviews are conducted semi-annually and may take 3-6 months.

Important Note: The NKA acts solely as the approval authority and does not serve as a contracting agent or employment agency for NKA-approved guides. The NKA does not solicit individuals or guarantee employment with cruise ship companies.

The 2024-2025 list of NKA-approved guides can be obtained by emailing Greenland National Museum’s National Heritage Resources Manager at harmsen@natmus.gl.
